The 2-year-old was found inside the Esplande Gardens apartment complex in Mount Vernon by his mother at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday, according to officials. He was reportedly found unresponsive by his mother, who rushed him to a local hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.
According to the NBC New York report, the case is now believed to be a homicide, and investigators are searching for the toddler’s babysitter, who reportedly has not been seen since fleeing the hospital the child was treated.
The death has been deemed “suspicious,” as the investigation into the fatal incident continues. No cause of death has been provided, and the boy’s identity has not yet been released.
More information is expected to be released at a planned afternoon press conference announced by Mount Vernon city officials.
